A Really Good Spot on tour

  • Justin Wright is a composer, cellist, and multimedia artist from Montreal, Canada. After finishing his masters in molecular biology, Justin left science and started performing in bands of all sorts before eventually teaching himself how to compose, using the techniques he learned in recording studios.

  • Justin has shared the stage with luminaries such as Johann Johannsson, Hauschka, Lubomyr Melnyk, Colin Stetson, Okkyung Lee, and Mount Eerie. Peter Broderick recorded an album of reworks of Justin’s music.

  • A Really Good Spot, Justin’s sophomore full-length album, was released in July 2022 on Beacon Sound (US) and First Terrace Records (UK). Justin was in the middle of cancer treatments at the time, and postponed touring until summer 2023.

  • Justin is an experienced touring performer, having performed solo and collaboratively at the Montreal Jazz Festival, SXSW, Pop Montreal, Mutek, the Montreal Biosphere, the Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Berlin, and many venues in Europe, the US, and Canada.

  • Justin is currently a PhD student at Princeton University studying under Tyondai Braxton, Donnacha Dennehy, Dan Trueman, and others, after Caroline Shaw heard his music and urged him to apply with her reference letter.

  • Justin’s music will appeal to fans of Colin Stetson, Tim Hecker, Nils Frahm, Laurie Anderson, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Max Richter, Kara-Lis Coverdale, or Jóhann Jóhannsson

Justin’s most recent album, A Really Good Spot, is a wildly creative montage of string improvisations, cassette loops, field recordings and, at certain pivotal moments throughout, poetry & voice.

While the cello remains a central engine behind many of the tracks, A Really Good Spot is a drastic departure from Justin’s previous records of acoustic string drones. Throughout, Justin displays an evolved compositional sensibility which intimately and honestly embraces the beautiful spontaneous moments, tribulations, and studio edits that would conventionally be removed from a polished production, and brings them to the foreground.

Stage setup/Tech needs

This simple setup is adaptable for nearly any stage and features a small on-stage audiovisual setup controlled from the stage. A mic’ed piano or keyboard is optional. In some cases all outputs have run through an on-stage mixer and mixed to stereo from stage. The Video Gong is both a projection screen for interactive video and a MIDI controller, struck by Justin’s bow, that triggers notes and changes in the tracks.

Outputs:
-Cello (mono DI)
-Laptop (stereo DI)
-Modular synth (2 DIs) OR can go through laptop
-Piano/Keyboard (optional)
-Vocal mic for talking

Other needs:
-Small projector for use on-stage (optional)
-Piano/electronic piano (optional)
-Chair with no arms
-Mic stand with an arm ~1 meter

A live performance video from 2019. Video of new setup coming soon.
